degrees overnight to the denver metro area. it's only expected to reach single digits for high temperatures today and, at this point, there is no end in sight, with temperatures not getting above the teens until well into next week. on top of the very cold temperatures that are dangerously cold to be out in, we are seeing extremely slick conditions now forming on some of the roadways so it's treacherous driving conditions, ice underneath the piles of snow, and, in addition, there is extreme avalanche danger. now up in the high country after more than a foot of snow dumped in some of the rocky mountains. so concerning, in fact, that one of the ski resorts had to end world cup ski training that was happening just yesterday because the conditions just were that dangerous. as this deep freeze really settles in here, of course, this storm is pushing across much of the country, down south, and up through the midwest, so nobody

is out of the woods yet. john, zoraida? >> our thanks. damaging wind, snow and ice and bits cold temperatures as well. indra petersons, where is it headed next? >> you notice it is warm outside. a warm front in the area and temperatures ahead of this system very mild today with light showers. all of that will change. let's talk about these temperatures. with the windchill added in right now, dangerous temperatures. denver feels like negative 30 degrees right now and minneapolis about negative eight. that is the cold arctic air we talk about that is combining with this front as it makes its way across. the big threat we have been talking about this is whether or not we start to get that freezing rain and take a look especially when we talk about illinois and back through texas today we will start to see that threat of that wintry mix only spreading as we even go in through tomorrow and take a look at this. as we go through the weekend we are dealing with this. saturday early morning it kicks

30 minutes past the hour. a bruising winter storm leaving half the nation in a deep freeze this morning. i got to say more on the way. bitter, cold temperatures and ice and snow and dangerous winds being blamed for six deaths so far. twin cities taking an absolute beating and temperatures dropping 10 degrees below zero overnight. half a foot of snow triggering 5 hundred accidents and 53 injuries statewide. the conditions are bad in the northeastern part of that state and they are digging out from 28 inches of snow in and 18 inches of snow on the ground in duluth. roads are impassible and means no school. the dangerous weather doing little to stop snowball fights from breaking out all over duluth. that looks like a good one right there. >> that looks like fun. minus 7 degrees in denver at 9:00 a.m. p.m. last night. shattering the old record by two degrees.

the biggest concern is not even the temperatures. it's really the threat of an ice storm. as we go through the afternoon, we are talking about icing especially from illinois back in through texas and this threat will be with us all through the entire weekend. notice it even spreads as we go in through friday and then into the weekend. the first system kind of makes its way offshore and that is good news. let's talk about what we are expecting as far as snow, rain and ice. rain about 2 inches expected and snow still another 6 inches but the main story is the freezing rain and this is the area we are talking about a threat of over half an inch of freezing rain and that is the concern. will we see power outages as we go throughout the weekend from the heavy ice on the pour lines? the first system and there is a second one behind it for the second half of the weekend. almost identical to the first one and that is going to be the concern as we go through the weekend. just imagine downed power lines and here comes the second system. >> people need to be careful but at least they are forewarned. thank you, indra. 33 minutes past the hour. secretary of state john

minister's objections and they hope to convince the prime minister to move past the deal and let's work to go on a comprehensive agreement and address the concerns about the nuclear program. >> are they going to work together in order to deal with the concerns that israeli has? they are going to have a voice here in that deal? >> reporter: well, secretary kerry speaks with prime minister netanyahu almost daily and i think both president obama and secretary kerry gave prime minister netanyahu their assurances that israeli will be involved in these scheduletations on how to get this comprehensive deal with iran. the threat, israeli threat of a military strike to go after iran's nuclear program is still out there. obviously, they don't want to do that, so they want to make sure israeli is comfortable with any ultimate deal. >> let's move on here dealing with kerry's only mission on this trip is not that.

he is tying kick-start peace talks between the israeli and palestinians. how is that going? >> reporter: this is his ninth trip, secretary kerry, to the israeli and palestinian territory. in july you remember he gave the israelis and palestinians a nine-month deadline to reach a peace deal. we are about four months in so the clock is ticking and i think it's fair to say there is little progress. today, general john allen who has been working with contrary on israeli security issues, will present some detailed ideas on how israeli security needs, particularly in the west bank, could be addressed in the context of a peace deal with the palestinians. it shows now the u.s. is really putting its own ideas on the table instead of leaving it to the israelis and the palestinians to negotiate because they are not getting very far. after this iran deal i think we can expect a lot of skepticism from prime minister netanyahu and secretary contrary will meet later with palestinians president abbas who will press
